Inside the Belqas Municipal Waste Recycling Project
Work is progressing at the Belqas Waste Recycling Plant in Dakahlia Governorate, alongside ongoing activities at the Kafr El Sheikh site.
The Belqas project forms part of the Kitchener Drain water quality improvement program and is being implemented within projects involving the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development,under the supervision of Egypt’s Ministry of Local Development and Ministry of Environment.

A 600 Ton Per Day Waste Processing Facility
The Belqas plant is being developed on an area of approximately 18 acres, with a design capacity of up to 600 tons of municipal solid waste per day.
Handling this volume requires an integrated treatment line where different stages of the process work together, from receiving mixed municipal waste to sorting, biological treatment, and recovery of materials with further value.
The project follows the same direction as other waste management facilities supported by Innovativa Smart Solutions, including the Kafr El Sheikh waste recycling plant.

Mechanical Biological Treatment at the Core of the Plant
The Belqas Waste Recycling Plant relies on Mechanical Biological Treatment, MBT, to process mixed municipal solid waste through a combination of mechanical separation and biological treatment.
The mechanical section separates different fractions of the incoming waste stream and recovers recyclable materials.
The organic fraction then moves through biological treatment processes designed to improve its potential for further use.
This integrated approach helps extract more value from municipal waste before the remaining residues are directed to final disposal.

Recovering Value from Municipal Solid Waste
The objective of the processing line is not limited to separating waste into different fractions.
The system is designed to identify materials that still have economic or industrial value and direct them toward suitable recovery routes.
Recyclable materials are separated for further recycling.
Suitable combustible fractions are prepared for the production of Refuse-Derived Fuel, RDF.
Organic fractions are processed biologically to support further resource utilization.
Together, these processes reduce the amount of residual waste requiring sanitary landfill disposal and improve overall resource recovery from the incoming waste stream.

Technology and Equipment from International Partners
The technologies and equipment used within the project are supplied by international companies represented by Innovativa Smart Solutions.
The plant combines mechanical sorting systems, waste treatment equipment, and technologies selected for large-scale municipal solid waste processing.
The role of each system forms part of a wider treatment sequence, where waste moves through several processing stages rather than relying on a single separation step.
